I will be bringing a bunch of games and plan to demo a couple of my favs (i.e. Ruse, Ascension, Munchkin, We Didn’t Playtest This, etc.) and talking gaming and game development. This is my goofy goober with her second (?) love!

I got the wifey (pictured left) some stuff for our Valentinaversary, but I wanted to put this up, as well. I call it that because our anniversary is the day before Valentine’s Day. We are redefining gender boundaries with our marriage, as I tend to be more sentimental and mushy than she is, so I thought I would include a few key songs from our past with a little blurb about each one to let readers know why these songs are significant to us and to let Carol know why they are still significant to me. Just so you don’t feel bombarded, this blog post will include many feels and at least one of the stories will probably make many people feel awkward, just by reading it. You’re more than welcome to stop reading, at any point.

Floater: “The Sad Ballad of Danny Boy”

This song isn’t very romantic… I’ll give you that. It’s not romantic at all, but its pertinent. Back in high school, I was dating Carol’s best friend and she was dating one of my best friends. My girlfriend at the time never appreciated my taste in music, and didn’t like Floater. I asked Carol (because I was pretty into her, even before I broke it off with the girlfriend at the time) and my buddy to go to a Floater show with me at the Venetian Theater in downtown Albany (it has since been converted… into a church). Her boyfriend wasn’t feeling well and took off during the show, leaving Carol and I on an impromptu date. She held my glasses for me while I was moshing. That was a good sign! Anyway… both her and I knew that we were into each other, at the time, we were just waiting for me to pull the trigger on breaking up with the girlfriend, which happened just a couple of days later. The concert was on October 28th, 1998 and Carol and I consider it our first date. That night, after the show, I took Carol home and we ended up sitting in her driveway for a couple of hours chatting in about whatever it is that two in-love teenagers chat about. I remember the energy in my car being nerve wracking (for me anyway) as I felt that there was deffinately more there than I was allowing to happen. I was shaking like a leaf due to nerves, but I wasn’t sure what I was nervous about. In a way, had already won her over. I shouldn’t have been nervous… I’ve always felt like Carol was out of my proverbial league and I think I was affraid to take the chance that she would realize that she ACTUALLY IS out of my league.

Blackstreet: “Good Lovin’”

I think it’s important to point out the overt sexual nature of this song. I also think it’s important to point out that this song is actually a very tender song, if you drop that shit out. What can I say? It was the late 90′s when hip-hop was exploding and virtually EVERY SONG on had that overt sexuality. This was an important song for us. Ironically, the first time I had ever heard this song, was when Carol played it while thinking about a guy she had broken up with several months prior to my becoming part of her life. Carol and I started out as mutual friends of my girlfriend. We started to become friends and became best friends. We would confide in each other. I had the Blackstreet CD because, at the time, “No Diggity” was beating up every radio! We bonded over this song, because that was when our friendship became more of an emotional experience that we were sharing, because we were opening up to the idea of showing that raw, vulnerable side of ourselves to each other. This song, in my mind, is intimate between us, even if it did remind her of a past boyfriend, at the time.

LL Cool J: “Candy”

I would like to refer to my previous statement in which I pointed out the overt sexuality in popular music of the late 90′s. I am not trying to say that neither of us were thinking about the sexy side of our relationship, I’m quite convinced of the opposite considering that I was 18 and Carol was 16. Also, I was there… I know for a fact that her mom would have shot me for some of the things we were doing in my car during some of those long, driveway chats. Pauline (Carol’s Mom), if you’re reading this… LOVE YOU! I am just trying to point out the romantic side of some of these songs. There is real value in some of the lyrics.

This song was really symbolic to me. The idea of being young and having to journey towards each other hit home, for a couple of reasons. She lived in the next town over. I would have to drive 15-20 minutes to go see Carol. I also think of this time as an awakening for myself. This is when I started grasping the idea of romantic love and the things that came with it. I’m not sure if Carol has the same feeling about this song…

I want to point out that I say STARTED to grasp it. I don’t believe love can be understood. In all honesty, I was quite the bouche bag in my late teens and early 20′s, so I try to not recall those times. I made plenty of mistakes, the ones that I regret are the times when I was a bad boyfriend. I would give ANYTHING to go back and be a better boyfriend to Carol. My mistakes weren’t (often) huge, I didn’t beat her and I wasn’t a serial cheater. We weren’t that “on again/off again” couple that most of us remember from high school, but I can recall times when I hurt Carol. I still beat myself up for them. She doesn’t always read my blog posts, but I hope she reads this one and sees that… I could have been so much better to Carol… They say hindsight is 20/20, and sometimes that is accurate and cruel.

Jagged Edge: “Let’s Get Married”

This is where it could get awkward to read about… For Valentine’s Day in 2000, I took this song, on a CD, and a boombox out to Carol’s work. During her lunch, I showed up in the back parking lot (where she took lunch), set the boombox on the ground and (horribly) performed this song to her. All her co-workers were there and I’m 100% positive she was embarressed as shit! Wait… I get to show my girl I love her, prove I have no humility as a human being AND be a pain in the ass simultaneously? I’M IN!

Killswitch Engage: “The Element of One”

Once again, on the surface, this doesn’t seem like a love song. So I made sure to find a video that included lyrics, as not all people can hang when it comes to metal. If you pressed stop the second the screaming started, press play! I’m only asking you to hang for 3 and 1/2 minutes! Suffer through it, if you must. It’s worth it. Many people believe this song to be a verbalization of the singer’s (Jesse David Leach) relationship with god. I can’t speak to that, as I have never had the chance to speak to him about the topic, and probably never will get that chance. This song hit me really hard because love is love, whether it’s for a deity or a person. The screaming parts are the thoughts of the loved, and the chorus and refrain are from the lover. The screaming makes a lot of sense, symbolically, as love, when being truly experienced for the first time, can be maddening and can make you feel like you don’t belong to yourself… like your someone else’s. Like your lifeforce or soul has gone out of you and become someone else’s, and the same is true for that person… and that’s totally OK with you. Sometimes this song comes on and catches me off guard while my iPhone is shuffling through my music library… I cry every time and I instantly miss Carol.

Katy Perry: “Hummingbird Heartbeat”

If it were the 80′s right now, I would have put “Feels Like the First Time” here. This is my most recent addition to my list of “our songs”. I’m not entirely sure Carol even knows that… Again, I note the suggestive nature of the lyrics. I’m not sure if that proves how immature I am, or how young our relationship is. I still have that romantic yet idiotic love (and lust; if I’m being honest) for Carol. I like the fact that even though Carol and I have spent nearly half of our lives together, that love is still fresh to me. I don’t see a problem with remaining giddily and childishly in love with my wife… isn’t that what every relationship should strive for? I WANT to feel like high schoolers, canoodling around in the backseat of the car at a park downtown when we should be at school! I don’t ever want to lose that!

Carol: I hope you enjoyed this bit of nostalgia. Even in the era of digital content, I can still manage to make mix-tapes for you! I love you more than I could ever say or show. I try my absolute best to be my absolute best for you. You are my number one. You held my glasses for me when I went into that mosh pit on our first date, and that’s amazingly appropriate, because I feel like you still do that for me. I am pursuing dreams that many people have told me that I shouldn’t pursue. Every time I charge at one of those dreams, you’re always there holding my glasses… being my rock… and telling me that I can do it, even if you know better, sometimes. You mean the world to me… Thank you and I Love You. ;’)

P.S. I’ll go get a new keyboard… I cried all over this one.

Unfortunately, at only 20-months-old, she passed away on January 13, 2013. Gabi was staying with her babysitter while her older sister was at Kindergarten and Mom and Dad were at work. This part of the story get’s a bit fuzzy as, when I heard it, the event had occurred only 3 hours prior and was being told to me by people in a fit of panic while in a family waiting room at Doernbechers Children’s Hospital in Portland, OR. At ~3 P.M. on Friday, January 11, John Garcia arrived at his daughter’s, babysitter’s house to find the babysitter loading his daughter, Gabi, into the backseat of her car. She informed John that there had been an accident and she was taking Gabi to the hospital. John took Gabi from the babysitter to find her unresponsive in any way and bleeding heavily from her head. The story that the babysitter told was relayed to me by Sara and John as:

Gabi was taking a nap on a bed in the babysitter’s spare room. When the babysitter came in to check on the baby later, she found Gabi standing up on the bed. As the babysitter was approaching the bed, Gabi started running toward the edge of the bed. As Gabi went over the edge, the babysitter attempted to catch the baby but only managed to grab her by the ankles. This actually turned out to make the situation worse, as it created a pivot point that caused Gabi to hit the floor head first, cracking her skull and causing Gabi to lose consciousness on impact. This injury caused massive swelling of Gabi’s brain.

Gabi was transported to the hospital in Lebanon, Oregon where John contacted his wife Sara, Gabi’s mother. Upon her arrival to the hospital ER, the doctor informed them that a LifeFlight helicopter was on its way to transport Gabi to Doernbechers Children’s Hospital. Due to the seriousness of Gabi’s injury, there was no room in the helicopter for either Sara or John to ride up in the chopper, so they would have to drive up. The message was passed through the family that Gabi had been hurt and was being transported to Portland via LifeFlight. At ~6:30 P.M., my mother-in-law, Pauline, came over to my house and asked me to wake my wife, as she was taking a post-work nap. I stirred my wife and we listened to Pauline report the very little that they knew at that point. She told us that they would call us when they knew more, but were waiting for Sara and John to arrive in Portland (~1 1/2 hours north of us) and speak to the doctor. Once they knew more, they were going to call all of us and let us know an update. My wife and I agreed to go over to Pauline’s house and wait for word with her and her husband, Mark. We waited there until about 8 P.M. before we got the call (not looking good) and left.

Due to freezing conditions that night, the trip took longer than any of us would have liked and we arrived at ~10 P.M. It had not gotten better since we left; in fact the opposite was true. Her brain continued to swell, causing the doctors to take a piece of her skull off completely and leave it off to allow the brain to swell without causing more damage. under these circumstances, that is normal procedure. Shortly after our arrival, we were informed that the neurologist had told John and Sara that the likelihood of Gabi receiving an injury of this magnitude from an accidental fall from a bed was “virtually impossible” and that the hospital had contacted the authorities and child services.  I will not inject my opinion of what that could mean, but I’m sure you will arrive at nearly the same conclusion I did. Shortly thereafter, we were told that our wonderful little Gabi was virtually brain-dead. John and Sara elected to wait another 24 hours in hopes that the swelling would recede and Gabi would improve. We all stayed at the hospital until 2 A.M., at which point my wife, her parents and myself (all of which rode up in my vehicle) elected to head back home for the night. John and Sara have another daughter that was being cared for by Sara’s grandparents while they were at the hospital and we thought someone else should watch Bella so they could go up and see Gabi. At this point, most of us were still maintaining a shred of hope that we would arrive in Portland the next day to find Gabi had taken a turn for the better.

The next day, my wife and I drove up. Things had not gotten better. Again, our hopes were smashed with the news that Gabi was fully brain-dead and any sort of recovery (which was highly unlikely) would end up having profound effects on Gabi’s quality of life, with the best outcome being that she would live the rest of her life in a vegetative state. Needless to say, that day at the hospital was hard for everyone. Detectives spoke to Sara and John, as well as, John’s younger sister, who has known the babysitter since high-school. They insured us that there was an investigation underway and that they had already spoken to the babysitter once, with plans to speak to her again in the near future. We all spent the day knowing what was coming, but avoiding it at all costs. Around 7 P.M., the doctors did another test (probably just for everyone’s piece of mind) that showed no improvement. John came out to us, delivered the news and asked if I would go with him to have a cigarette. I was amazed at the level of control that Sara and John were exerting… They seemed to be taking it well. However, they stayed in Gabi’s room with her most of the time, causing me to theorize that they were melting down in there, and putting on one hell of a show for the rest of us to keep us from breaking down. It didn’t work as most of us were huddled masses of tears at some point that day, but they tried.

John and I went and smoked. The discussion made me realize that most of my family was having quite the existential crisis when it came to religion. Some leaned harder on their faith, while others shunned the idea of god. We had several cigarettes and talked about Gabi and Bella. He told me that they were going to be “pulling the plug” in a while and I could tell that John had mixed feelings about it. In retrospect, the conversation seems more like he was gathering his strength to do what we all knew needed to be done. In the elevator, on the way back up to the waiting room, John said to me something that will resonate with me for my entire life:

We had [Gabi] for 20 months. Even with all this, I wouldn’t give it up, because having her for 20 months is better than never having her at all. -John Garcia

Can you imagine the presence of mind he must have had in that moment to say something like that? How powerful, heartbreaking and consoling all at once. That was the moment that it broke for me. Up to that point, I was trying to keep myself under control. To be the one that made sure people were eating. I was running little errands like grabbing soda or coffee for anyone that needed it and knowing that the roads might be icy and that I should probably hold it together to make sure I can drive all of us home, if no one else can. That moment in the elevator with John was what penetrated my facade of strength. I managed to get it under control until I was out of John’s presence, as he was gathering strength for what came next and didn’t need his blubbering brother-in-law being a mess.

The entire time, I was the only one that did not go into Gabi’s room to see her. I didn’t want that image polluting my memory of Gabi’s laughter as my beard tickled her chin. When everyone gathered in her room for the last time, I still couldn’t bring myself to go in and see her that way. I waited just outside the door for anyone to emerge needing someone to hold them or be there for them, which was just the case. Gabi died surrounded by her family and loved ones. A little piece of all of us died with her that night. After it was all done, we all stayed at the hospital for a couple of hours while Sara and John did the last of the paperwork. At ~10 P.M., we all left the hospital at the same time.

That was just over a week ago. Sara and John took the last week off of work, getting things in order and preparing the memorial service. I stopped by a couple of times to deliver some food and check-in with them. Turns out that was a good idea as John had told me that he had forgotten to eat that morning. I found that John’s two sisters, Lisa and Kat, as well as Kat’s boyfriend, had been staying with them quite a bit to help out around the house and such. I haven’t heard much of anything about the investigation of the babysitter, but it appears that they are leaning towards the idea that it was an accident. I’ve said it several times recently, but I am torn on the idea. Part of me wants it to be a freak accident in which the shittiest bunch of circumstances all came together to bring this about. Should that be the case, at least I can maintain some hope in humanity. Another part of me wants this to be someone’s fault. Religious people tell themselves that “God wanted his precious, little angel back because he missed her”. I understand that, even if I don’t believe the same. Believing that “God wanted his angel back” or that someone is a lunatic and killed a baby puts purpose to such a tragic event, even if that purpose is shitty. It’s harder to handle that a person has been stolen out of the lives of those that loved them by some cosmic roll of the dice. It is easier to blame the babysitter, as that gives me a place to focus my hate, rage and anguish over this. There’s also the guilt of taking that person for granted. I don’t see my loved ones as much as I should. We all have busy lives and our own oats to roll, so we take the existence of our friends and family as a given, never expecting them to be plucked out of the world and out of our lives.

On the positive side, the community has been amazing! Sara’s mom started a Fundrazr page to help cover the medical bills and pay for the memorial. A local country music radio station picked up the story and have been showing support for our family by plugging the page on the radio and on their websites. At the time of the writing of this article, the Fundrazr site has already received over $3,000 in contributions!  Papa’s Pizza locations in Springfield and Corvallis, OR are doing fundraisers on January 28, 2013 to help out and the Lebanon, OR Dutch Bros coffee stand is donating $1 for every drink sold on January 25, 2013. Ascension is, for my money, the best deck building game on the market. I know the Dominion crowd won’t appreciate that statement, but Ascension is a better two player experience than Dominion. I like the Ascension system simply because of limitation of the “Supply” and the (virtually) unlimited amount of basic purchases and Monsters to defeat. There’s also some variety as it applies to strategy. I love that Ascension is available for mobile devices, as well. What card gamer doesn’t like the chance to strategize behind their opponents’ backs? So now you know that Earth has seasons due to it’s 23.5 degree axial tilt. It would be safe to say that Earth would be a perpetual tropical zone, without that tilt. To those of us in the Northern Hemisphere currently, that’s not looking so bad right about now. The Earth hasn’t always had that tilt, however. In its early stages, during the Late Heavy Bombardment, Earth’s axis was, essentially, straight up and down. So what caused that tilt? Most scientists think that it was the same thing that caused the formation of the Moon, the collision of two planets.

The Late Heavy Bombardment was a time (~4.5 million years ago) when the Earth was being battered by the debris left over from the formation of the four inner, rocky planets. Earth was rampant with vulcanism and the entire crust of the Earth was super hot and very fragile, much like a cooling lava flow.

There have been many studies done on rocks that have been returned to Earth from the Moon (by teams of geologists, physicists and astrophysicists) that show that the isotope ratios between lunar rock (rocks from the Moon) and terrestrial rock (rocks from the Earth) are identical. In other words, the Earth and the Moon have very similar, if not identical, origins. You see, the moon didn’t exist as celestial body meant to orbit the Earth and give us tides, it didn’t exist at all until the “Theia”, a planet that was, approximately, the size of Mars, slammed into the early Earth, striking it a glancing blow and tilting our axis to 23.5 degrees. This collision blasted the magma like mantle of both the Earth and Theia off of the planets, forming an accretion disc around the Earth. At this time, the entirety of the Earth would have been an ocean of magma that had an accretion disc around it that consisted of the combined mantles of Earth and Theia. Over time, the Earth cooled and began creating the cellular structures (amino acids) of early life on the Earth. While that was happening here, the Moon was forming right next door, ~64,373 meters (40,000 miles) away from the Earth.

There is plenty of evidence to show that, like Earth after  Theia’s impact, the Moon was also once an ocean of magma. There are a couple of theories about the coalescence of the Moon from an accretion disc to accommodate the molten origin of he moon. One states that the moon could have actually formed from this lava like debris in a mere ten years via constant collision between the smaller parts. Each collision would have the impactor imparting  its energy into the larger body in the form of heat, causing that larger piece to remain molten. Continue this process until the Moon exists. This is the prominent theory, as it is the explanation given on NASA’s website. Sounds good to me. I’ll let British space scientist Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock explain it with an animation from the BBC:

I tend to enjoy the second theory more, however, as it contains a night sky that I would LOVE to see. The second theory, put forth by David Smith of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and known as “The Big Splat”, hypothesizes that the accretion disc formed into two smaller moons that eventually collided together much the same way that Earth and Theia did. This large impact imparted enough energy into the moon to cause it to become molten. Think of looking up into the sky and seeing two moons (albeit, much smaller moons) crossing the night sky! That would be amazing! NASA is looking into this theory and recently sent up a pair of solar probes that will measure the gravity of the Moon, known as the GRAIL Mission. The mission was completed on December 17, 2012 and the information obtained is still being combed over. I will be putting up a post with that info as soon as it becomes more readily available. That’s it for this post. I know, that’s a very long and convoluted way to say, “Happy Sun/Earth Perihelion Day!”, but I know it interested me and thought it might interest you. BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Fav combo!

I found out about Cards Against Humanity, the “Party Game for Horrible People”, back in the summer, but couldn’t seem to come up with a copy as it sells out so fast. I added it to my Amazon shopping cart back in August and asked my Amazon app to notify me when it became available for purchase. Sometime in October, the order was placed and I received my copy shortly after. Cards Against Humanity = Legit! This is not meant to be a review of the game, as any given person will either love it or hate it regardless of what I have to say about it. It has, however, become a favorite amongst my game group and my in-laws… I know. Weird, right?

On a completely unrelated (until recently) topic, I really love me some nerdy music. Jonathon Coulton, Paul and Storm and Marian Call are a few of my favorites. I heard about the Portland, Oregon based (that’s only a couple hours north of me!) Doubleclicks back in the summer and they quickly climbed into my top 5! I absolutely LOVE their nerdy folk tunes about Star Trek and con-life. Con-life actually means convention life, which is far less gangster than you were probably thinking. Although, I would totes listen to the Doubleclicks doing a cover of the infamous Tupac and Snoop Dogg collabo “Americas Most Wanted”. The answer to your question is “Yes.”, I would totally bust a verse on that track! #Goldmine

Well, my fellow nerds, I love when two different portions of my nerdom converge on each other to make one of those, “Holy shit! Mind = Blown!” Venn Diagrams. I just found out (a couple months behind in the times) that the Doubleclicks were asked to make the official Cards Against Humanity theme song! #TotesAmazeBalls!
